Google Launched Datally to save your mobile data

Google has launched a new mobile app that is designed to monitor, manage and save your mobile data, named as ‘Datally’. This is a smart new app by Google. It’s a mobile data manager that will help you monitor, save, and gain control of your data. Through tracking and controlling app data usage, you save more data and get the most out of your phone.

Datally shows you real time data used by each application and you can block the application from using the data clicking on the lock icon in front of them. On the top of the Manage data it shows real time statistics of the data usage which can be filtered as “Today”, “This week” or “This Month”.

Data usage

According to Reuters, Datally was created by Google’s Next Billion Users, an internal effort to make internet services more accessible to people in countries where technology infrastructure is not as fast or affordable as in the United States or Western Europe.

TO use fully functional Datally, user need to enable data usage from Android settings. That should be managed from in app settings but I guess this is fine for now.

The app is of 4.9 MB size and got more than 100,000 downloads so far. Google claims to save 30% data for users. It required Android 5.0 and above to install. One more interesting feature I got that you can search nearest wifi in side the app based on the location.

Josh Woodward, the product manager overseeing Datally, says the idea for the app came from seeing the lengths that people go to preserve data, particularly in countries where mobile plans remain relatively expensive. In Delhi, Lagos, and Buenos Aires, Woodard said his team saw people who would keep their phone on airplane mode at all times to prevent data usage. When they wanted to check their notifications, they’d turn airplane mode off, let all the info rush in, and then turn airplane mode back on while they looked over the new information.

In recent days Google is focusing more on developing nations. It launched a specialized UPI based payment app TEZ for India and low bandwidth youtube app for developing nations.
